The Master Planning Committee, on behalf of the Vestry and the Board of Trustees, is delighted to share with the community a glimpse into the future of St. John’s, with renderings and diagrams of both the reimagined Plant Avenue and Orleans Avenue Campuses. The images are the product of the ongoing Master Planning process, which is being conducted by the architectural firm of Cooper Johnson Smith Peterson.
As a reminder, the Plant Campus will expand to occupy the full 2.5 acres owned by the School, which will become accessible in the fall of 2020. When completed, this will be the home of Grades 2-4 and 5-8, each in their own area, as well as shared spaces, and administrative offices. The Orleans Campus will feature brand-new classrooms and play and learning areas for K(4), K(5), and Grade 1, and a number of new Church spaces and upgrades as well.
The designs incorporate many key needs identified during the Master Planning process from the thoughtful input from faculty, staff, administrators, Head of School Elect Hugh Jebson, parents, students, Church staff, and both the Board and the Vestry.
For the School, the identified needs include more spacious classrooms, outdoor green space for play and for gathering, more dedicated spaces for arts, music, and Innovation, a cafeteria, and enhanced security. A common thread was that the new facility should be more attractive, more welcoming, more secure. One of the great advantages of the Plant Campus design is that it can be completed in stages, which will allow students to stay in their classrooms until new facilities are ready for them.
Improvements on the Church side include recovering the space on the second floor of Brickman Hall to provide a dedicated Choir room and adult education and meeting spaces for other church groups, refurbishing and upgrading the administrative offices, the Lowry Room, and the Parish Hall, and increasing accessibility by installing an elevator and a wheelchair lift.
The designs, exciting as they are, do not represent the finished plans, nor even the finished Master Plan design, which will be completed in August. Much may change before we arrive at the design which best meets our needs. However, they do provide an initial sense of the tremendous possibilities that lie ahead.
Stay tuned for more exciting information at the beginning of the school year and program year!
